Breaking personal promises

I'd vowed to post once a day, even though the site sint live, it would provide a great deal of content for launch, and would assist in indexing the new version of the site with new relevant content. Yesterday I failed to post an entry.

Its not all bad though. The reason that I failed to post was due to two main factors. The first being how crazy and busy it is at work right now, we are dealing with a client thats submitting change requests on and around launch day. The second being related to the first, in that I haven't actually made any progress since the last post.

CakePHP routing issues, perhaps.

Zero producivity, anyone? Tonight saw me knee deep in the CakePHP core trying to track down why the bloody hell my passed parameters were not being correctly passed as inputs to the action on a controller. Frustrating to say the least. PhpNut took some time out to explain routing changes, and point me in the right direction. He's extremely helpful, despite his busy schedule.

While I am on the right track, as it stands, the URL parsing of the core isnt passing my args around. If I had a nice codeblock syntaxhighlighting helper, I would be able to show you some cool code, and the different methods I have been attempting to get this corrected... Alas, its just another item on my todo list thats getting done at a frustratingly slow rate.

Slacker, Hard work at the Gym

Been a bit of a slacker today with regard tot he overall site progress. I find that this is a general rule with Mondays. I have normally a pretty heavy day at work, and its recently been followed up with a 1 hour session with a Personal Trainer at the gym. Tonight I started feeling dizzy, tingling in my face, and very spewy. Not a good sign. So a 1 hour training session turned into 40 minutes.

The sites only developments today were the movement of some of the sidebar content off into elements that can be rendered on any page. This presented me with a question that I have dealt with in the past, but I am not entirely sure I have solved it correctly. When elements are rendered and require data, is it okay to be using requestAction to gather that data? Or should the respective controllers that render that element, be charged with the loading and setting of that data to the view? More often than not, its rendered as an element as its got useful, changing data that may not be entirely relevant or "associated" with the current page information. Such as "Latest Blog Posts", which could appear anywhere on your site.

Friends, Comments and Concert

Busy day. Concert tonight, saw Jamie Hutchings from Bluebottle Kiss. Today I had to do some running around to get my helmet fixed and some special diet food for Captain Jack (my cat). And the comments RSS feed is up and running.

The comments RSS feed is a little different in the content that is is presenting. I have it throwing back the users name and the blog post title they were responding to. You should be able to subscribe to this now and be updated as people respond to posts.

RSS feed for latest blog posts

Tonight has been a bit of an interesting discovery session for myself. My experience level with CakePHP is growing fairly rapidly, and tonight I felt a genuine urge to change one of the Cookbook articles discussing RSS Feed Generation.

Its going on the list... Not the normal list.. But the real, fair-dinkum, life-goal list.

Comment Posting and Gravatars

Slow progress lately. There is a tonne of stuff to be done at work, and I've actually been doing this site a little slow on purpose. Today I have achieved my own spin on the implementation of a Gravatar helper, and Comment posting is complete with filtering an censoring to clean up potentially abusive responses.

This site is intended to be a proof of concept, not only of my skills, but of the CakePHP framework and its ease of use. Its also a showcase of the new CSS that I have learnt.

My new motorbike: Kawasaki Ninja 250R

So today it finally happened. I bought myself a brand new Kawasaki Ninja 250R 2009 model.

I've been without a bike for almost a year since the last one was stolen, and its been less than enjoyable having to catch the bus to work every day. Not only will I be saving some money, as the bus was expensive, but I am now unrestricted and can travel at a time that suits me, rather than fitting into the bus timetable.
