The Developers Fear of Making Mistakes

I'm a regular helper in the CakePHP IRC channel. Helping out other budding developers, whether they be new to PHP or just new to CakePHP makes me feel like I am helping in my own way to assist the community and grow the developer base for my favourite MVC Framework.
More and more I am seeing developers asking questions where they could help themselves. Some of the time, this is due to misinterpretation or lack of research. However there are plenty of cases in which the developers are aware of what needs to be done, they understand the framework, but they are afraid to simply try it out.
When did we become so scared to potentially break our test data? Are developers not using versioning systems? Has anyone else seen this trend rising?

Sometimes it is not fear of breaking things but just plain lack of time for trying everything that comes into mind. That's where some expert help like yours is gold :)
